Small businesses do answer engine optimization by making sure AI search crawlers can read their site, putting the direct answer to each customer question near the top of the page, keeping reviews and listings accurate, and checking each month whether AI answers name them. The bottom line: it is mostly the same basics that help local search, done with more attention to wording and proof, and it does not require an agency retainer or special files. This guide supports our main explainer on answer engine optimization.
Why a small business should care
BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey of 1,002 US adults found that 45 percent of consumers used AI for local business recommendations in the past year, up from 6 percent. G2's 2026 research found 51 percent of B2B software buyers start research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google. People are asking AI who to hire, and an AI answer usually names a handful of businesses, not ten.
What to do first, week by week
| When | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Check that your robots.txt allows the AI search crawlers: OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot | OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers |
| Week 1 | Confirm your key pages are indexed in Google and not set to noindex or nosnippet | Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode |
| Week 2 | Rewrite your top service pages so the first 40 to 60 words answer the main question, including price range, area served, and how to book | HubSpot's guide advises putting the core answer in the first 40 to 60 words |
| Week 3 | Add a real FAQ to each service page with the questions customers ask on the phone | Answer engine queries are longer and more conversational than classic keywords |
| Week 4 | Update your Google Business Profile, hours, services, and photos, and ask recent customers for reviews | Reviews and listings are among the sources answer engines draw on |
| Monthly | Run 20 customer questions on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and record whether you are named | Single answers vary, so repeat each question |
What to write on a service page
Take a plumber with a page on water heater replacement. A page that begins with a company story gives an answer engine nothing to quote. A page that begins "Water heater replacement in Tampa usually takes 3 to 5 hours and costs between $1,200 and $2,800 depending on tank size and whether a permit is needed. We replace tank and tankless units and offer same week scheduling" gives it a complete, quotable answer. Use your own real prices and times. Then add the details under headings written as questions: how long does it take, what affects the price, do you remove the old unit, do you handle permits.
Reviews and listings
An answer engine does not rely on your site alone. Reviews, directory listings, and community mentions corroborate what your site says, and studies of citation sources find review sites, community threads, and reference pages among the most cited. Keep your business name, address, phone number, hours, and services the same everywhere. Ask every customer for a review, with no incentive and no screening, since Google's policy prohibits selectively soliciting positive reviews.
What to skip
- llms.txt files. Google says you do not need llms.txt or special AI files to appear in its AI features.
- Special schema as a shortcut. Google says there is no special schema for AI Overviews. Accurate markup helps, and Ahrefs found no citation lift from adding JSON LD markup to pages already cited more than 100 times.
- Keyword stuffing. In the GEO paper's benchmark, keyword stuffing performed about 10 percent worse than the unmodified baseline, while citing sources, adding quotations, and adding statistics raised visibility by up to about 40 percent.
- Paying for guarantees. No one controls what an assistant says.
How much time it takes
A small business can complete the first four weeks in about 10 to 15 hours in total, which is our estimate and depends on how many pages you rewrite. After that, plan about an hour a month to run your questions and update a page. Results come in months, not days. Questions people ask
Is answer engine optimization worth it for a small business?
BrightLocal found 45 percent of consumers used AI for local business recommendations in the past year, up from 6 percent, so a business that does not appear in those answers loses a growing share of discovery.
What is the first thing a small business should do?
Make sure the AI search crawlers can reach the site and that key pages are indexed, then rewrite top service pages so the direct answer comes first.
Do I need a new website for AEO?
Not usually. Most of the work is rewriting existing pages, adding FAQs, and keeping reviews and listings accurate.
How do I know if AI names my business?
Run 20 customer questions on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity several times each and record how often your business is named.
Does Google My Business matter for AI answers?
Accurate business profiles and reviews corroborate your site, and BrightLocal's data shows consumers use AI for local recommendations, so keep your profile current.
