Dental practices get named in AI answers by publishing procedure and new patient pages that answer the patient's question first, keeping one set of facts across the website and every listing, collecting reviews the compliant way, and letting the AI search crawlers in. The bottom line: patients now ask AI both health questions and who to see, the answer names a few practices, and a practice with clear pages and consistent profiles is easier to name. This guide applies our main explainer on answer engine optimization to dental practices.
Why dental practices should care now
KFF's May 2026 tracking poll found 29 percent of US adults use AI tools or chatbots at least monthly for health information and advice, nearly double the 17 percent in June 2024, and its March 2026 poll found 32 percent had used AI for health information in the past year. BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults found 45 percent had used an AI tool to find a local business recommendation, up from 6 percent in 2025. Patients are asking AI about toothaches, costs, and which dentist to call.
Seven steps for a dental practice
- Lead each procedure page with the answer. For an emergency visit, a crown, or a cleaning, state in the first 40 to 60 words what it involves, how long it takes, and what affects the cost. Give a real range or say how the estimate is made, and say whether insurance usually covers part of it.
- Build a new patient page. Hours, how to book, what to bring, insurance accepted, and what happens at the first visit, in short answers under question headings.
- Add an emergency page. Say what counts as a dental emergency, the number to call after hours, and where to go if the office is closed. AI tools get many urgent questions.
- Show the dentists. Name, school, credentials, and years in practice on a page of their own, matching the facts on your listings.
- Use accurate schema. The schema.org type
Dentistexists for this, and Google says markup must match the visible text and that no special schema is needed for its AI features. - Ask every patient for a review, and reply with care. OCR has penalized dental practices for replying to reviews with patient details. Our guide on whether review requests are safe under HIPAA and the one on showing Google reviews on a dental website cover the rules.
- Let the search crawlers in. OpenAI says sites that opt out of
OAI-SearchBotare not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and Anthropic says blockingClaude-SearchBotmay reduce visibility in Claude search. Check robots.txt and your firewall, and keep the content in the page HTML, because the major AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, according to Vercel.
The ADA and state limits
Section 5 of the ADA's Principles of Ethics says no dentist shall advertise or solicit patients in any form of communication in a manner that is false or misleading in any material respect, and the ADA's 2025 update added that the standard applies to statements made by social media influencers. A Dental Tribune article notes that some states restrict testimonials on dental websites. Because an AI answer can repeat what you publish, check results claims, superiority claims, and before and after photos before they go on the site.
How to check your results
Pick 20 to 30 questions your customers ask, run each one three times on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, and record how often your business is named. SparkToro and Gumshoe found less than a 1 in 100 chance that two responses returned the same brand list, so repeated runs matter. Our guide on how to measure answer engine optimization has the method, and our answer engine optimization checklist covers 30 checks in five groups.
